This is a town brimming with charm, crossed through by numerous canals and branches of the Sorgue river. The town is peppered with lovely paddle wheels that recall the old flour-milling, fishing and artisan trades.
The Collegiate church Notre Dame des Anges is one of the most exceptional Baroque churches in Provence. Every Sunday, a huge traditional market attracts a good number of visitors who come for a stroll and to delight in some of the best produce Provence has to offer.
The town is also known for the innumerable bric-a-brac traders and antique dealers who have settled there and for its antique fairs and end-of-week spring and summer markets that draw enthusiasts from all over Europe.
The magnificent villages of the Luberon (Gordes, Oppède, Roussillon, Bonnieux, etc.) are within a short distance. It is in Fontaine de Vaucluse that the Sorgue springs forth from the mountains, a truly magnificent site. Planted with lavender fields by the monks, Sénanque abbey is located in the hollow of a small protected valley.
There are some beautiful Mediterranean beaches (Carry le Rouet, Sainte Marie de la Mer, Grau du Roi, etc.) located within 100 km. Numerous other sites (Pont du Gard, Théâtre Antique d’Orange (ancient theatre of Orange), Les Baux de Provence, the city of Aix-en-Provence) are also more than worth the detour !
Time indeed should be set aside to canoe down the Sorgue, discover the magnificent Camargue nature park, the creeks of Cassis and the forgotten villages in the Luberon nature park… A veritable paradise for nature lovers, mountain bikers and hikers alike.
